Characters of Mrs.Frisby and the Rats of Nimh: Chapter 1-5

Mrs.Frisby
The main character of this interesting tale is Mrs.Frisby, the protagonist, "the head of a family of field mice."(pg 3).   She is a mother of four and can never "get rid of her nagging worries that..." (pg 29) are in her busy life.   Mrs.Frisby has been successful in  "keep[ing]  her family happy and well fed, through luck and hardwork.  Even though they did not have a perfect life,  Mrs.Frisby nd her family "made the best of what there was..."(pg 4) around them. Mrs.Frisby is a caring, hardworking, worrisome and helpful field mouse.

Timothy
Timothy is one of Mrs.Frisby's younger sons who is "invariably kind..." (pg 21) to all of his sibilings.  Timothy "shone with intensity of his thought when he spoke..." (pg 11) but " in a voice as small as a whisper." (pg 28). "He was the thinnest of her children..." (pg 10) and is known to be a hypochondriac but has a heart full of love.

Teresa

Teresa is the oldest child and very caring. In this story when Timothy falls ill, Teresa was "home to look after Timothy."  She is very sweet but sometimes gloomy.

Martin

Martin is Mrs.Frisby's older son who is a big help to everyone. He is "the biggest, strong[est] and quick mouse..." (pg 7)  who is also very handsome and obidient.

Cynthia

Cynthia is "the youngest..." (pg 8) child of Mrs.Frisby.  She is a very "slim, pretty girl mouse..." (pg 8) and a little "scatterbrained." (pg 21).  She is also very helpful.

Dragon the Cat

Dragon is Farmer Fitzgibbon's cat who is terrifying.  This cat has a "thick, furry tail and glaring yellow eyes." (pg 21).  Dragon is a very violent cat and loves eating field mice, which is not good for Mrs.Frisby.

Mr.Ages

Mr.Ages is Mrs.Frisby's friend and the doctor field mouse of the neighbourhood.  He is "a white mouse..." (pg 13) and very wise. Mr.Ages helps Mrs.Frisby by giving her medicine for Timothy, which helped Timothy.

Jeremy the Crow

Jeremy is "a young..." (pg 22) and ''foolish crow." (pg 24).  Although he is a foolish crow, he is very kind and helpful.  In the story, Jeremy was near death and Mrs.Frisby had helped him escape. In return Jeremy had saved her also which led to a friendship.

Farmer Fitzgibbon

Farmer Fitzgibbon is the owner of a farm which Mrs.Frisby and her family are living on. He is a get to it kind of guy but sweet to family and friends. He "was getting ready to plow..." (pg 33) but his tractor broke down which he used for years.  That shows that he has been a farmer for many years.

Paul Fitzgibbon

Paul is Farmer Fitzgibbon's "old[est] son." (pg 34).  He is very "quiet, hardworking boy..." (pg 34) but a little clumsy.  On the other hand he is very "strong and careful about his chores." (pg 34)

Billy Fitzgibbon

Billy is Farmer Fitzgibbon's youngest son who is "age 12." (pg 34).  Billy is much "noisier..." (pg 34) and "has an annoying habit of skimming rocks at anything that moved." (pg 34)

Old Shrew Woman

The Old Shrew Woman is one of Mrs.Frsiby's neighbour and a very forward mouse.  She is "short temepred and has a big appetite." (pg 30).  ''She is scarcely bigger than a peanut but has wit as sharp as her teeth." (pg 30).  For advice everyone in the neighbourhood would come to her.

Setting of Mrs.Frisby and the Rats of Nimh

In Robert C. O'Brien's book Mrs.Frisby and the Rats of Nimh is a fun tale about a family of field mice struggling to get past moving day with a sick family member Timothy. This takes place "in an underground house in Farmer Fitzgibbons's vegetable garden" (pg.3) near the end of winter. Which is the hardest season for Mrs.Frisby and her children.
